Weathering a Storm Means Planning for It

On Saturday morning I flew to Phoenix to watch my Rams lose (again).  When I left it was a comfortable 65 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny….not bad for Denver in November.  In Phoenix it was of course perfect…sunny and temperatures in the low 80’s, a refreshing breeze and warm, inviting evenings.  Unfortunately, Tuesday morning I had to fly home.  What greeted me was howling winds, snow, and a temperature of 6 degrees.  Yes….six.  That is a drastic change, but fortunately I had read the weather forecast in advance and was as ready as one can be for something like that.  Others on the plane were wearing shorts and light shirts.  They didn’t fare as well.

You’ve probably heard the old adage “if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.”  That certainly applies in a climate such as Denver.  It is applicable to the business world as well, and especially our industry.  Production and capacity requirements are cyclical and unforeseen needs do arise, but good forecasting and planning can help limit those surprises.  When they do happen, the used equipment market can often provide options quicker and more cost effectively than an OEM.

In the pre-owned equipment market there are many outfits advertising equipment.  Some good, some not so good.  We hope that by adding value, custom configuring systems, and offering rental options and parts support we fall into that “good” category.   At present it seems many companies capacity requirements are in indeed like the weather, they’re changing quickly.  With the right information, we can usually respond to those requirements and provide options.
