The heart of the Spectrum 88XX test systems is its VXI card cage which houses analog and digital instrumentation, channel cards, functional interface boards, system controllers, and user-specific VXI instruments. Standard C-sized VXI instrumentation can be added to the Spectrum to improve throughput, accommodate test strategy changes, and technology advances. The cage and backplane system, as well as the channel cards, controllers, switching, and instrumentation modules were designed to comply with VXI specifications. Depending on the model Spectrum 88XX system there can be from one to four 13 slot VXI card cages, each card cage has 10 open slots available for some combination of channel cards or C-sized VXI instrumentation.
Teradyne enhanced the basic VXI functionality for in-circuit and product functional test by providing a means for connecting to a board-under-test in a production environment and extended the Spectrum 88XX card cage to include a shielded, impedance-controlled connection path to the test fixture interface. The Spectrum 88XX design also incorporates a high-quality analog backplane and switch matrix for routing signals throughout the system.
There are three types of channel cards designed for the 88XX family of test systems.
- CC1 Channel cards have 128 analog, non-multiplexed test channels and a full, six-wire analog switching matrix for shorts/continuity testing, analog power off, analog power on, MultiScan vectorless test, and analog functional test capability.
- CC2A Channel cards contain 128 hybrid, non-multiplexed test channels. Full analog, vectorless and digital testing on every pin. Programmable logic drive levels from -4.3V to +4.3V with a maximum drive current of 600mA into a 4 Ohm load.
- CC3 Lightning Channel cards supply 128 channels and are composed of a 64-channel master board and a 64-channel expander board unit. CC3 Lightning combines flash and ISP programming with in-circuit testing. CC3 Lightning cards include a CC2 compatibility mode that defaults to CC2 values.
There is a wide range of standard and custom UUT power supplies available to support most in-circuit and functional test applications.

TestStation SE (Spectrum 8862)
The TestStation SE is the current production model of the Spectrum 88XX family. The 8862 has two 13 slot VXI card cages that can be configured with a combination of channel cards and VXI instrumentation. When used as an ICT system the 8862 can have a maximum of 20 CC2A channel cards for a total pin count of 2,560 test pins.
Spectrum 8851
The 8851 has one 13 slot VXI card cages that can be configured with a combination of channel cards and VXI instrumentation. When used as an ICT system the 8851 can have a maximum of 10 CC2A channel cards for a total pin count of 1,280 test pins.
Spectrum 8852e
The 8852e has two 13 slot VXI card cages that can be configured with a combination of channel cards and VXI instrumentation. When used as an ICT system the 8852 can have a maximum of 20 CC2A channel cards for a total pin count of 2,560 test pins.
Spectrum 8855e
The 8855e has four 13 slot VXI card cages that can be configured with a combination of channel cards and VXI instrumentation. When used as an ICT system the 8855e can have a maximum of 40 CC2A channel cards for a total pin count of 5,120 test pins.
